- This is a task description for 2 Software Developers located in the
- Data Management Division (DMD) User Support Group at European Southern
- Observatory (ESO) in Garching (Munich), Germany.

- Education:
- University degree in Computer Sciences or equivalent.
- Assignment:
- ESO is developing a prototype Data System for its NTT
- telescope. The selected candidates will be involved in the
- development of software tools to support the preparation of
- observations with this telescope. Such tools will integrate a
- number of existing subsystems under a common user interface and
- will access database and information services provided by
- ESO. The development environment is Unix, C++ and Tcl/Tk for the
- GUI aspects.
- Experience and knowledge:
- The ideal candidate is familiar with common software engineering
- practices, and can follow a project from the requirements
- definition phase to coding, delivery and user training; s/he can
- work independently while being able to interoperate with other
- developers and end users and has a firm command of the English
- language; s/he is at ease with object oriented concepts and
- methodologies; has experience in C/C++ and Tcl/Tk programming in
- Unix environments. Familiarity with relational databases, and
- general networking (TCP/IP, WWW) will be considered an asset.

- Garching (Munich), Germany
- Duration:
- 1 year, possibly extendable to three.
